Gwent – Winter
Winter time in Gwent is a fantastic experience, watching masses of waders, wildfowl and herons around the pools.
Day begins at 9am at RSPB Newport Wetlands and will finish at around 7-8pm.
Suitable for children and those with disabilities, please let us know beforehand so we can adapt routes.
We begin our day by meeting at RSPB Newport Wetlands before enjoying a gentle walk around the reserve looking for wildfowl such as Wigeon, Gadwall and Shoveler. We also have the chance of raptors passing us as well as Cetti’s Warblers and Bearded Tits among the reeds.
After our walk around RSPB Newport Wetlands, we move further east to a fantastic place for waders which occasionally has the odd rarity turn up. At this site we will look for more wildfowl and herons including Spoonbills.
We then move to a local reservoir to look for grebes and wildfowl. We may also see divers such as Red-throated and Great Northern, we will also be scanning for more waders and gulls turning our walk around.
We’ll return to finish our tour at RSPB Newport Wetlands to look for the awe-inspiring Starling murmuration or watch the roosting birds coming into the sea wall.
