A nocturnal tour to look primarily for Nightjars whilst also listening to their loud bursts of churring, we will also aim to see others such as Woodcock, Bats and other migrants before it begins to get dark.
Tour begins at 8pm at the site car park and finishes around 10:30pm.
Suitable for children, due to the steep inclines and non-sturdy paths, it will be unsuitable for regular wheelchair users, crutches and scooters may be adaptable – contact us first! Nordic walking sticks recommended if unsure of inclines.
As Nightjars are summer migrants, we won’t know whether they arrive to the same site year after year until they return from their migration in May. We have two or three reliable sites which we will scout before deciding which site to go with on the tour themselves – the day will be allocated when you receive your tour pack after we’ve scouted all the sites to give you the best chance of seeing the birds and having a great experience! The location will be Rhondda Valleys.
Overview:
We will meet at the car park of the chosen site and give you an introduction to the area and where we will set off to look. The tour will begin before it gets dark to give us a chance to look for other migrants nearby such as Pipits, Woodcock and possibly Goshawks. We’ll also have a bat detector with us to spot some bats such as Common Pipistrelles, Soprano Pipistrelles, and Noctules. We’ll then walk to a suitable location and position ourselves to wait for the churring to begin to then locate the Nightjars, we’ll have a scope with us for closer look.
