Wetland Wander in Gwent

Explore the vast reedbeds of Newport Wetlands RSPB on this Wetland Wander with us. We’ll be going on a gentle walk looking for the wildlife that calls these reedbeds home, with each season we see wildlife wildlife using the site. We’ll then drive round to Goldcliff Wetlands using our own vehicles.

Binoculars are strongly encouraged, as well as a scope where possible for some distant wader and wildfowl observations. We will have binoculars to borrow for the tour.

Overview:

Meet at RSPB Newport Wetland car park at 10am to join up with your leader. From the car park, we will head out to walk through all the reedbed systems looking for species particular to the season.

Summer:

Focusing more on the warblers and summer visitors, we’ll be looking for Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler and Grasshopper Warblers on our walk through the reedbeds, we’ll also be looking for Orchids such as Bee Orchid, Early Purple, and Southern Marsh Orchids. Making our way through the reedbeds, we’ll reach the saltmarsh looking for chicks Shelducks, Mallard and other ducks. Not only is the site fantastic for birds and orchids, but dragonflies and damselflies are plentiful. We may be lucky and see displaying Bitterns and Marsh Harriers.

Heading over to Goldcliff Wetlands, we’ll be looking for breeding Avocet, and other summer waders that have arrived to the pools. Wheatears, Redstarts and other summer migrants have also used the area for feeding.

Winter:

Winter will focus more on waders and wildfowl of the reserve. Most of these are Shoveler, Gadwall, Tufted Duck and we may even spot some Snipe and Little Grebe. Reed Buntings, Redwing and other thrushes are known to be using the reserve to stop off on a break during their migration.

Moving over to Goldcliff Wetlands, we’ll be looking for Barn Owls and Short-eared Owls as well as Snipe, Redshank, Greenshank and other large groups of waders. We may see more raptors using the site for hunting such as Peregrine, Marsh Harrier and Merlins, occasionally we may see Otters using the site for feeding.
